Federal Shutdown: What It Means for CASL and Chicago Families

October 6, 2025

October 6, 2025 Federal lawmakers were unable to reach an agreement on a budget or a short-term funding bill by the September 30 deadline. As a result, the federal government has shut down. This shutdown could affect families across the country, including many here in Chicago who turn to CASL for support.

CASL remains fully operational and ready to serve our community as the effects of the shutdown trickle down. However, a prolonged shutdown could have real and immediate consequences for our work. Many of our programs rely on federal funding and reimbursements.

With the shutdown in effect:

  • Reimbursements for non-essential services are delayed.
  • Federal agency response times are slowing.
  • While some essential services continue, many government employees are not being paid, which limits their availability and responsiveness.

We understand that this is a stressful time for many in our community. Families who depend on our services are facing uncertainty, and our staff are working tirelessly to minimize disruptions. But, continued delays in federal funding could significantly impact our ability to meet the growing needs of our more than 7,000 clients, especially those who are most vulnerable.

Smiling faces of CASL
